Still
Still is the story of an open woman and a closed man; a collision between honesty and secrecy; unstoppable force meets immoveable object.
My experience of secrecy – an unwillingness or inability to share the deepest parts of oneself with others – is of a destructive force. However, in Still, honesty’s role is aggressive rather than healing, kicking down a door that might better have remained shut.
But at least that gives us a story. And stories, because they have an ending, bring us peace.
Jo and David share their passion, humour, excitement, bitterness, disappointment and rage – and their story ends.
We are in the midst of our stories, and we worry about where they are taking us.
But although we may envy characters the peace of their story’s resolution, it is not something we wish for ourselves.
Because when we find what we are looking for, we stop searching. When we find peace, perhaps we stop living, too.
